Dr Bridget Chang-McDonald, MBChB, FRCPA

Dr Chang-McDonald’s role at Gillies McIndoe Research Institute allows her to contribute her pathology expertise to the various research projects and thereby play a part in the important work being done. Her medical and pathology background also provide a strong clinical perspective for the various research projects.

Bridget joined the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute in 2019. As a pathologist, Bridget’s roles include confirmation of the diagnosis of tissue donated to our tissue bank and subsequent organoids. She assists in working up and interpreting immunohistochemical and special stains used for various research projects. Bridget is involved in a project using digital spatial transcriptomics to profile heterogeneity in cellular and molecular landscapes in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. 

Bridget graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the School of Medicine at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1991. She did specialist training at Hutt Hospital and Waikato Hospital and was admitted to the Fellowship of The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) in 1999. She subsequently practised as an Anatomical Pathologist in New Zealand (Waikato Hospital, Diagnostic Laboratory Auckland and Hutt Hospital) and overseas at Singapore General Hospital.

Outside of work, Bridget is a busy mum supporting her children at school and watching them participate in football, rugby, rowing and swimming. She also enjoys going to the gym and travelling.
