Who is a Patron?

A Patron’s role typically involves lending your name and support to our cause and research activities through the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute and the Gillies McIndoe Foundation. The Research Institute’s activities include research and clinical trials, and the Foundation’s activities include fundraising, advocacy and investments. Here, we will refer to both entities as Gillies McIndoe.

As a Patron, you may be asked to perform a variety of roles, including:

  • Raising awareness: One of your primary responsibilities as our Patron is to help raise awareness about our mission and research activities. Raising awareness might involve attending events, speaking with the media, or using your personal or professional network to promote our research and aspirations.

  • Fundraising: As our Patron, you may also be expected to help raise funds for Gillies McIndoe. This might involve attending fundraising events, reaching out to potential donors, or using your influence to encourage others to donate to Gillies McIndoe.

  • Advocacy: As our Patron, you may also be asked to advocate for Gillies McIndoe’s cause. This might involve speaking with elected officials or other influential individuals or using your network to raise awareness about the challenges related to our mission.

  • Relationship building: As our Patron, you may be expected to build relationships with potential donors, volunteers, and other supporters of Gillies McIndoe. This might involve attending networking events, reaching out to individuals or organisations that may be interested in supporting us, and maintaining positive relationships with existing supporters.

Being our Patron of Gillies McIndoe should be a highly rewarding experience. It allows you to use your network and influence to help us undertake innovative research that aspires to turn scientific discoveries into more effective, less invasive, and more affordable and equitable therapies. 

As our Patron, you can help us help improve outcomes and quality of life for people facing cancer and disfiguring conditions. The scientific understanding of these diseases to develop effective therapies that improve patient outcomes and quality of life. However, it is also a significant responsibility that requires a strong commitment to Gillies McIndoe’s mission and values. As a Patron, you must act in good faith with integrity, objectivity, and in the best interests of Gillies McIndoe.

Our Patron

Hon Dame Annette King

Annette King was the New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia from December 2018 to December 2023.

Prior to taking up this position she served as Deputy Leader of the New Zealand Labour Party and Deputy Leader of the Opposition from 2008 to 2011 and from 2014 until 2017.

She was a Senior Cabinet Minister in the Fourth and Fifth Labour Governments of New Zealand and was the MP for the Rongotai electorate in Wellington from 1996 to 2017. 

She is New Zealand’s longest serving female MP with 30 years in Parliament.

Portfolios included Health, Police, Transport, Justice, Immigration, Employment and States Services.
