Innovating Keloid Scar Treatment

A New Hope for Treating Keloid Scars

If you’re living with keloid scars, you know they are more than just a physical mark—they can impact your comfort, mobility, and confidence. Keloid scars are thick, raised scars that form when the body produces excess collagen during the healing process. Unlike regular scars, keloids grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound and can continue to expand over time.

For many, these scars cause discomfort, pain, and emotional distress, affecting quality of life in significant ways. When keloids form near joints, they can even limit movement, adding another layer of challenge.

Rethinking Keloid Scar Treatments

Current treatments for keloid scars—like surgical removal, steroid injections, or radiation therapy—can be invasive, expensive, and often come with a high risk of recurrence. These options may not provide the relief patients hope for, leaving many feeling stuck in an endless cycle of treatments.

But what if there were a simpler and non-invasive way to manage keloid scars?

Developing a Non-Invasive Solution

At Gillies McIndoe Research Institute, we are developing an innovative topical cream to treat keloid scars. Using patient-derived cell lines, our team has identified a combination of repurposed medications that effectively halt the pathways driving excessive collagen production. This non-invasive solution offers a promising alternative to current treatments.

From Research to Real-World Impact

In partnership with Massey Ventures and AFT Pharmaceuticals, we are advancing this topical treatment to clinical trials. If successful, this cream could transform how keloid scars are managed, providing patients with a convenient and effective option to reduce scarring and improve their quality of life.

We are proud to announce that this collaboration was recognised with the Best Licensing Deal Award at the 2024 KCA Commercialisation Awards. This reflects the transformative potential of this work and its ability to make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives.

A Commitment to You

At the heart of our research is a mission to bring hope and healing to those living with keloid scars. We understand the physical and emotional toll these scars can take, and we’re dedicated to delivering treatments that are not only effective but also life-changing.
