Susan McWilliam

Unlike many of my friends, I felt quite smug at 69 years of age, that I wasn’t on any medication for any ailment. Most of my working life had been as a Legal Executive, which I found satisfying, challenging and rewarding.  I retired at 60, intending to pursue my passion for travel; featuring Europe, cruises, and motor home trips around New Zealand.

Life was good with wonderful family and friends, with fun and plenty of activities to fill the days of retirement.  With both parents in their 90s and still living independent lives, I imagined myself as a feisty old lady at a similar age.  However, getting the diagnosis in April this year (2023) that I had a glioblastoma was life-changing – but in a very positive way. I was able to have surgery to debulk the tumour and ongoing treatment. I have found all this empowering, and it has clarified what is really important in life and allowed me and my husband to appreciate every moment of every day and be grateful for so many things we are experiencing.

Because I was already familiar with the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute's research on glioblastomas, I was very keen to become involved in any way that could assist them. To promote the work they are undertaking I have become an Ambassador. I feel very proud and humbled to be associated with this incredible team and the passion they have for the projects they are undertaking.
