Dr Matt Munro BSc(Hons), PhD, Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

Dr Matt Munro studied at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) from 2010 until 2013, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Ecology & Biodiversity and a BSc(Hons) in Cell & Molecular Biosciences in conjunction with the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research.

Matt worked as a production biochemist before joining the GMRI team as a cell culture technician in 2016. He then completed a PhD in Biomedical Science at VUW, based at the GMRI, under the supervision of Dr Swee Tan, Dr Lifeng Peng (VUW), and Dr Susrutha Wickremesekera (CCDHB), graduating in 2021.

His project explored the role of the renin-angiotensin system in colon cancer stem cells, producing four research publications in the process and presenting his findings at national and international conferences.

In his current role as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the GMRI, Matt is continuing this work by developing colon organoid model systems, in collaboration with Dr Lifeng Peng at VUW.
